The weekend began with a horrible choice of movie for Friday night horror ..and then I had a gastronomist's nightmare in Saturday night feast from the east. Then came the last straw..watching the oscar winner "Capote"..on sunday to sum up my perfect weekend gone wrong.
When your beloved cousin and movie buff from far and away extols the performance of Philip Seymour Hoffman (the same guy whose performance in The Talented Mr Ripley(1999) raised eyebrows all around!) in her top ranked blog you simply dont want to be left behind. So here I was, in front of my TV eagerly awaiting "Sandra Bullock" on screen playing the famous Nelle Harper Lee, as the blog read.
You can forgive Capote's nasal alabama accent & forget Sandra Bullock ( for the role was played by Catherine Keener, Oscar nominated for the same ) , but simply can't follow why something like this was made into a movie when the subject matter of the movie - his book "In cold blood" was neither the first nor the best non-fiction that he ever wrote. It was only befitting that PS Hoffman played the gay, reclusive & eccentric Capote with that beautiful lisping voice of his! Not surprising he got nominated and rewarded with the Oscar, going by the kind odd & offbeat themes that draw attention these days!

WOWOWOW Frankie, firstly, Capote had a natural speech defect. And when PS Hoffman changed his voice to suit that, I was awed! I never liked PS Hoffman before. I love biopics, and movies about writers (Neverland, for one). They look like a documentary. Actually I am OK with it. It was odd and off beat and not your run of the mill oscar winning movie.
Sandra Bullock played Harper Lee in Infamous, a movie with the same story.
The blog reads:
"Sandra Bullock plays Nelle Harper Lee, yeah, the same Harper Lee who wrote "To Kill a Mocking Bird" in Infamous."
in Infamous. Not in Capote.

P.S i haven't seen Capote, so maybe it does suck but a lot of people whose opinions i trust really lvoed it.

Does that mean I shud watch gore,smut & filthy language?? What's grunge gotta do do with it?? Our movies tastesare waaaaaay apart!
The gore, smut and filthy lnguage is there because that's how things are in real life. Are you telling me your friends actually talk the way they do in most mainstream movies? You have to check out either Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs, they'll change your perception of a good movie, and good dialogue completely. Tarantino was a God back then.
The grunge reference was because of the whole theme of grunge, it's dark, real, honest music, and that's the same qualities that make these movies so good. Look past the smut and gore, and you'll find that a lot of these movies have messages that are a lot more meaningful, and are a lot deeper and more insightful than all the "chewed up and ready to swallow" typical black and white morals of the story that the usual Hollywood fare calls a theme. These movies explore both sides, they don't take sides, they leave the moral decision upto you which is as it should be. They make you think. Cult movies get that way for a reason.

What part of gansta's paradise are you from?? You glorify these coz you love it and wanna be even apart of it deep inside. A "message" can be conveyed with all these to give you a so called "reality" crap OR can be conveyed in a simplistic way. However, in case of the former, its the graphical representations that leave deep impact in your mind rather than the message itself. Try watching "Munich" where Spielberg has sobered down and actually tried to convey the real message.
When you're talking about the life of a gangster or a hitman, that IS the reality of his life. Movies are art. Good art imitates life. I'm usually too busy thinking of all the incongruities and stereotypes that make up most movies to even bother abou the message, simplistic though it may be.
It's the difference between a movie warning against heroin use made by someone who's been straight edge all his life, and one made by a recovering heroin addict. One makes you laugh, and the other makes you actually feel the pain and the suffering. The difference between Nickelback and Nirvana.
