Ana's Song

If you have listened to Silverchair's "Ana Song" or watched its video, you'll be amazed by its likeness to a typical Nirvana song ( "Rape me"). Not to mention the semblances of Kurt Cobain in the lead singer's hairdo/posture . Not suprising, if you knew Nirvana is one among thier major influences.

Nirvana's untimely demise left a big void left in the World of grunge...but no one knew whether there would be a new torch bearer to lead the angst-ridden discerning youth. Lane Staley's suicide orphaned AIC...STP was hit by substance abuse problems..PJ's music geting different..Of course there were a lot of comers and goners..but none with a lasting footprint. This does not hold true with other genres like plain rock, rap or metal as you have a lot of bands to switch to.

That is why ardent Nirvana fan like me can never fill the void by listening to any other kind of music. The loud and metallic Soundgarden has turned softer in the reincarnated "Audioslave" with only Chris Cornell remaining. He does'nt even play the guitar. I've listened to "Like a stone"and " Be yourself". Pretty hummable, but no where close to grunge.Guess they had to change with the times...but thats what fans like me can't bear.

Among others, I ve also noticed Billy Corgan's (of Smashing Pumpkins) solo efforts ..

Is grunge dead?

Yes, grunge is dead.. Kurt Cobain, the guy who once posed with Frances wearing a tshirt that said grunge is dead, didn't know how soon that would become true and how important a part he would play in its demise....
April 5th 1994 is the day grunge died... Despite what everyone else says, Kurt's death rung the death knoll for grunge... It was never meant to be mainstream and with the success of Nirvana and the explosion of grunge across the world, it's death was inevitable... With Kurt's death, the entire generation that was entranced by Nevermind and Ten and had hitched along to the ride woke up and went back to the mainstream pop bullshit they were used to... Only the hardcore fans still mourn the demise of grunge and remember Kurt Cobain for what he was, a troubled soul who made great music that was filled with pain and emotion right down to the bone and that penetrated deep into your soul.... For the rest of them, they'll all remember Kurt the legend.... the real fans will remember Kurdt Kobain, the guy who knew exactly how we felt... Once Nirvana broke up, it all unraveled... Soundgarden lasted a couple of years and then broke up... AIC stopped gigging or recording with Layne Staley suffering from heavy heroin addiction... PJ, whose music i never considered absolutely grunge anyway, went in the direction of pure hard rock that it had always leant towards... Mudhoney, the ugly and honest grungers who never made it big are stil gigging and recording but their music now has a lotta different elements added to the droney grunge sound that made them so cult... Yes, Grunge is dead, but the music shall live on forever....

P.S : R.I.P Layne Staley, who died on April 5th 2002 of heroin overdose... he lay in his house for 20 days before he was discovered.... imagine locked up all alone in a house for 20 days, doing heroin until you overdose and die slowly knowing that nobody's coming for you.... Unfortunately, since he died on April 5th, his death is often overshadowed by the sugary and embarrasing articles about Kurt.... this April, let's also remember Layne...

" Oh, they've come to snuff the rooster, but he ain't gonna die "
